Dr. Gundersen knew in high school that he wanted to be a doctor. Once in college, he started to realize that if he wanted to be a “family man” and have somewhat normal working hours, Optometry sounded interesting and a way to have the best of both worlds. Dr. Gundersen graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in May 1979 and along with Dr. Ron Zuker (they became friends at I.C.O.), decided to go into practice together and bought Dr. Louis Jullie’s Muskegon practice in August 1979. A few years later, they bought an old house in Shelby and turned it into an office. In 1986 they purchased the existing practice of Dr. Wayne Gillan in Montague and began seeing patients there as well.
Dr. Gundersen and his wife of 33 years, Kate, have three children. Chris was in the U.S. Navy for four years after which he attended Michigan State University and graduated in May 2009 with a degree in Human Biology. Chris is back on active duty with the Navy. His specialty is cryptology and he is currently deployed to Iraq with JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command). Emily graduated from Albion College in 2008 with a degree in Economics and Marketing. She is a Graduate Assistant at the Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois in Champaign, while working on her Masters Degree in Sports Management. Anna is currently a senior at Albion College in the Gerstacker School of Business. She also plays on the Albion College tennis team.
Dr. Gundersen is currently serving in his tenth year on the Whitehall District Schools Board of Education. He enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, reading, golf and fishing.

Pam G. |
Pam began her career in the Optical field in 1976, working for her father Dr. Wayne Gillan. In 1986, Drs. Gundersen and Zuker purchased Dr. Gillan's practice and Pam continued in her role as an Optometric Assistant for Drs. Gundersen and Zuker. Pam works in our Montague and Shelby offices.
When Pam was asked what she enjoys most about her job, she said, the smile on the patient's faces when they put on new glasses or contact lenses and can see better, knowing she played a part in it. Pam also enjoys the challenge of getting really bent frames back in shape.
Pam graduated from Montague High School, Muskegon Community College and earned a BS degree in Education from Central Michigan University. Pam enjoys spending her spare time with animals (especially dogs and horses), reading, going to the movies, being outdoors (even enjoys snow blowing), participating in and watching sporting events as well as counted cross stitch and knitting.
