Dr. Gundersen knew in high school that he wanted to be a doctor.  Once in college, he started to realize that if he wanted to be a “family man” and have somewhat normal working hours, Optometry sounded interesting and a way to have the best of both worlds.  Dr. Gundersen graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in May 1979 and along with Dr. Ron Zuker (they became friends at I.C.O.), decided to go into practice together and bought Dr. Louis Jullie’s Muskegon practice in August 1979.  A few years later, they bought an old house in Shelby and turned it into an office.  In 1986 they purchased the existing practice of Dr. Wayne Gillan in Montague and began seeing patients there as well.

Dr. Gundersen and his wife of 33 years, Kate, have three children. Chris was in the U.S. Navy for four years after which he attended Michigan State University and graduated in May 2009 with a degree in Human Biology.  Chris is back on active duty with the Navy.  His specialty is cryptology and he is currently deployed to Iraq with JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command).  Emily graduated from Albion College in 2008 with a degree in Economics and Marketing.  She is a Graduate Assistant at the Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois in Champaign, while working on her Masters Degree in Sports Management.  Anna is currently a senior at Albion College in the Gerstacker School of Business.  She also plays on the Albion College tennis team.

Dr. Gundersen is currently serving in his tenth year on the Whitehall District Schools Board of Education.  He enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, reading, golf and fishing.

Dr. Zuker is an active member of Lake Harbor United Methodist Church.  His hobbies include computers, video, photography and kayaks.  Dr. Zuker and his wife Vicki have been married for 27 years.  They have two children:  Erik who is a senior at Michigan State University, where he is majoring in Civil Engineering, and Laura, who is a freshman at the University of Michigan, majoring in Health Sciences.

Dr. Zuker enjoys assisting patients in better health and vision and also enjoys getting to know patients and their families.

Donna joined our team in October 2009, bringing with her over 15 years of prior billing and insurance experience.  Donna began her career in Anchorage, AK as a medical assistant and in 1992 found coding and insurance billing to be her calling.  She is a certified coder and a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).  Donna works in the Muskegon office.

Donna has three children and enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren.  She and her husband Greg spend their spare time (weather-permitting) riding their Harley.

Sue M.
Sue began working part-time with us in October 2005.  She came to us with seven years of prior experience in the Optometric field, and had most recently spent ten years as a busy “stay-at-home” mom.  Sue graduated from Central Michigan University in 1986 with a teaching degree, but she “fell into” the Optometric field by chance and has enjoyed it ever since.  She began working full-time in 2008 and splits her time between all three of our offices.

Sue and her husband Scott have lived in Whitehall since 1995.  They have three children: Duncan, Connor and Skye.

In her free time Sue enjoys rubber stamping, scrapbooking and crocheting, as well as camping, geocaching and kayaking with her family.  She is also an active volunteer at her children’s schools and at her church, St. James Lutheran in Montague.
